The War for Spanish Legacy (1701-1714)

This war was a result of struggle for repartitioning European possessions and colonies of decaying Spain. French King Louis XIV achieved enthroning his grandson Philip Bourbon in Spain and planned to annex the Spanish domain to France. Austrian Habsburgers, who also claimed for the Spanish Crown, stated their refusal. Austria was supported by England that desired to usurp Spanish colonies, and Holland, Portugal, and Savoie. Despite the numerical superiority and offensive action, the course of war was unfortunate to France. They were crushed in the battle of Hochstadt. In 1706 Frenchmen are defeated in battles of Turin and Rumillies. Now the enemies of France play the first fiddle. The army of Louis XIV is forced to assume a defensive. Frenchmen manage to defeat English and Austrian forces in the battle of Malplaquet, but the general outcome of the war is not in favor of France. In 1714 in Rastatt, France signs a treaty to refuse all claims for Spanish lands.
